I need a disco. That is all.
They’re just so gorgeous. Probably my all-time favorite SUV design. There's no other car that so effortlessly straddles the line between old-school and modern. I will own one. Have I mentioned how cheap they are? Cosmetically flawless, mechanically sound examples can be found alllll day for $3000. What? How? And if I go into the relationship assuming the LR will break down every drive, than I can’t be hurt. It’s simple.
In other news, I passed my sometimes-I’m-too-lazy-to-do-annoying-car-work mechanic on the way home today. He was driving an imported blue Honda Integra Type-R with Championship White wheels. Fucking gorgeous. I’ve never wanted a FWD car more than right at that moment. I need to go get some work done just for an excuse to heck out his shop. It’s always a JDM wonderland...

I really like them, too. I’ve always gotten a chuckle out of their VINs. SALTY for DII, SALAD for LR3s.
The B pillar felt awkward for me when I drove one, for where I had my seat adjusted.

Also good.
I’ve seen a surprising number of the OG Infiniti sedans lately. Their lineup used to be so quietly classy, now... It’s just kinda meh

(teeeeheeee... i kid... oh wait... no i meant that one)

Didn’t know about SALAD for the LR3. I always enjoyed my SALTY vin on the D2 I had.

excellent counter point PLUS reliability

do it. I had a prefacelift d2 and it was lovely. I did dump more money in to it that I should have, but I don’t regret it.

Hmm. You can have my Volvo. I could see you with a 90's Volvo wagon

What are the chassis codes? There are 3 generations right? What is the one in the picture above, a DII?

He really should get a NedC ar S 40/V40 though, show support for the local industry (even though Volvo is out and Mini is in these days). Also they are fun enough little cars in general.

If you are not going to use the offroad worthiness
of Land Rover I would look at a Chevy Tahoe in the high end trims from the mid 2000's onward
. But I
’m being particle,
I’m sure you will enjoy the
engine out rebu
ilds the land rover provides.

Or maybe an Acura

facelifted d2, so 2003/2004. Headlights are the biggest give away for the change. prefacelift d2 98?-2002. I had a 2001

I’m with you. The reliability however terrifies me.

Thank you! Guess I'm most interested in 03-04. Off to Craigslist...

You can have all his nice stuff when he sells it off to keep the Disco on the road.

This would be an emotional purchase, not a smart purchase. Tahoes do nothing for me :/
And major rebuilds sound less scary now that I should have multiple vehicles...

Ohhhhhh. It's so boxy. I like it. What am I looking at?

It will happen! Looking at a Volvo wagon on Saturday. I’m doing my best to follow your lead haha

Acura SLX, 1996-99 or so, rebadged Trooper. Fairly rare, but this is the area where you’d find one.

While I cannot confirm this outside of forum speculation and whatever , 2004 is the better year.

I have made emotional purchases in the past, RE my 1991 Subaru XT-6. It was a terrible purchase and the car ended up costing me about $5,000 total in the 18 months I owned it.

If I was looking at larger SUV’s a 4-runner would probably
be what I would get. I agree the Tahoe is a very bland vehicle on the outside. The interior is very comfortable if a bit under appointed-it’s still a chevy.

Yikes. How did you manage to rack that much up? Did the xt6 have a ny redeeming qualities? They seem so interesting. Even around here I don't know if I've ever seen one in the flesh

I loved their 90s lineup and then the G35 came out... and vape city

I drive an 05 Silverado and my Disco was 100x better to drive, a better place to spend time in, etc. Only negative would be the power. And oh, reliability but mine was great for 3 years and 35,000 miles of daily driving until the head gaskets took a dump.

Get a Disco 1 instead. Less electrical BS, more reliable drivetrain, cheaper parts.

It was a salvage title, which didn’t scare me at the time but.... during time I owned it I replaced: 4 tires, 4 axles, some wheel bearings, entire ignition system, starter, O2 sensors, clutch, and then the suspension stopped (pneumatic on air bags) working while the power steering was on and off too... that was the last straw. Trying to steer this car without power steering was nearly impossible and I was looking at another $1,000 to R&R the air suspension with the suspension from a Legacy.
When the car ran well I loved it. The 2.7L flat 6 mated to a 5 speed was wonderful. My wife and I hit an all time trip time from Sacramento CA to Missoula MT with an average travel speed of something like 70 mph including stops. That car would cruise at 110 all day long and pull steep hills in 5th gear at 80 no problem. I dozed off once in Nevada and looked over and my wife had it >100 mph. Probably the fastest she has ever driven.

Do it! I love my Disco 4 even though it’s parts prices hurt my soul.
![]() 10/18/2018 at 15:15 |

Disco II is my top choice, but I wouldn't be against a 1 in a decent color for a good price...
![]() 10/18/2018 at 15:16 |

I can see why you dumped it. W onder how it would compare to an SVX...
![]() 10/18/2018 at 15:20 |
|
The SVX is much faster, more luxury,
and much heavier. Between the two I prefer driving the SVX, just because of the bigger engine and modern features like ABS and air bags. Fun fact, the wind
shie
ld wipers on an SVX don’t work
over 100.

I’m amused you think any of these can possibly be mechanically sound. That being said... Do it!

Avoid 03. 04 is the one you want. 04 already comes with the center locking transfer case, and fewer engine issues, of which 03 had quite a bit more.

you enjoy breaking down and electrical faults?

Ok weirdly I was thinking about this the other day and there are some things I think would bother you about the Disco. Mainly that it is a full-time 4WD vehicle. While this is awesome from getting from A to B, not so much for having tail out on mountain roads. Unfortunate, but there really isn’t a way to make it not full time. If you REALLY poke the bear, you can get it to do a 4-wheel drift... but that is a different bucket of crazy
